You just need a quick glance at Fogo to understand the volcanic origin of the archipelago. You'll be surprised at the numerous blond and blue-eyed inhabitants who inherited their looks from a distant and noble French ancestor, while a glass of the local wine grown on the slopes of the volcano will quench your thirst. Chã das Caldeiras is like an island on an island, where you'll feel cut off from the rest of the world.
This tour will lead you through the charming town of São Filipe, capital of the island with a rich architectural heritage and fascinating history. You´ll climb the crater rim and finally the vulcan itself - the highest point of Cape Verde.

Day 1
Flight from Santiago. When the plane approaches Fogo, one can't help staring at this dark cone. But what will charm us in São Filipe are the elegant and noble colonial mansions (sobrados), the pretty little streets leading to the ocean and the vivid colours of the Church Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Night in São Filipe.

Day 2Hike 8 hours // Level 4 // +1400m / -700m
We could just take the car to have a closer look at the vulcano - but walking through rugged landscapes and a dried-out river bed to the top of the crater rim is simply amazing. We take a deep breath as we enjoy the view over lava fields, the cauldron and the vulcano. There it is with all its power - right in front of us. Take a moment to internalize one of the most amazing view of Cape Verde. We walk on the crater rim - on our right, far away, the sea and on our left, the vulcano. Night in the cauldron.

Day 3Hike 6 hours // Level 4 // +1100m / -1100m
Before dawn we have breakfast because we need to leave early to avoid the excessive heat of the day. Once we reach the summit (2829 metres/9281 feet), and if the weather allows it, we are rewarded by an astonishing view upon the crater and ancient or recent laval flows. A second reward lies in the descent: we have the choice between running, sliding or rolling down the pozzolan gravel... It's so much fun, we'll want to hike up to be able to go down again!

Day 4
All good things must come to an end: we have to leave the island of Fogo. We bid farewell (despedida) to the volcano, as heartbroken as if we had to leave a dear friend. And what a huge friend!
